The Surrey Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) is a community partnership made up of more than 30 council members from a variety of cultural, business, academic, health and employment services, who work to help immigrants and refugees thrive in Surrey, BC. Through their collaborative efforts, knowledge and unique skills, each and every one of our council members helps focus our work on local issues and provide the information and data required to make a meaningful impact and build truly inclusive communities.
In honour of the work they do, the Surrey LIP would like to spotlight our council members to get to know them a little more. To start, we talked to Doug Tennant of UNITI, a partnership of three affiliated societies: Semiahmoo House Society, Peninsula Estates Housing Society and the Semiahmoo Foundation.
Here’s a little more about Doug.
What is your current position title?
I’m currently the Chief Executive Officer at UNITI
What does UNITI do?
UNITI promotes inclusion and creates models that will influence societal change.
What do you think the biggest challenge immigrants and refugees face in Surrey today?
I would have to say it is finding safe and affordable housing.
What are your hopes and/or vision for a diverse, inclusive and thriving Surrey?
I believe in a Surrey that is inclusive and welcoming. This includes immigrants, refugees, people with disabilities and other minority groups.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee. Black, so I am never disappointed if there is no cream or sugar available.
What’s your favourite food?
Sushi. There are some great Japanese restaurants in Surrey.
What are you reading right now?
I’m into Icelandic crime novels right now, maybe because of the winter weather we received in 2021. I recently finished Snow Blind by Ragnar Jonasson.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I lived in Malaysia when I was a child.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I feel very fortunate to be part of the Surrey LIP. So many great organizations doing good work in our city.
