The Surrey Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) is a community partnership made up of more than 30 council members from a variety of cultural, business, academic, health and employment services, who work to help immigrants and refugees thrive in Surrey, BC. Through their collaborative efforts, knowledge and unique skills, each and every one of our council members helps focus our work on local issues and provide the information and data required to make a meaningful impact and build truly inclusive communities.
In honour of the work they do, the Surrey LIP would like to spotlight our council members to get to know them a little more. This week, we’re spotlighting Rosy Takhar of the Surrey RCMP.
Here’s a little more about Rosy.
What is your current position title?
I’m currently the Crime Prevention & Community Services Manager with the Surrey RCMP.
What do you think the biggest challenge immigrants and refugees face in Surrey today?
The immediacy of needs is so great, it can be overwhelming. Imagining a time when it gets easier seems so far down the elusive road.
What are your hopes and/or vision for a diverse, inclusive and thriving Surrey?
My hope for a thriving Surrey is where everyone feels like they belong. They can see a piece of themselves reflected in our leadership and institutions, celebrated in our arts and culture, and cared for by our people and programs.
Coffee or tea?
Indian Chai steeped with all the spices.
What’s your favourite food?
Aloo Paratha is the definition of Indian comfort food. It reminds me so much of my childhood and what a treat it still is to have hot, homemade paratha made for me!
What are you reading right now?
I am currently reading Tell Me How to Be by Neel Patel and I am rewatching old episodes of The West Wing.
Anything else you’d like to add?
An individual’s feeling of safety and security is interwoven with their sense of belonging. We need to ensure our community nurtures those opportunities.
